A to Zanditon

Earlier this week I attended a talk by ethical high end fashion designer Ada Zanditon.  She's shown at LFW, designed a tour wardrobe for Patrick Wolf and is part of The Observer’s latest top 50 of the Courvoisier future 500.  And she's doing it all as ethically as possible.  My kinda girl.  Her ethical attention to detail is insane; not only does she use zero waste pattern cutting techniques and recycled fabrics, but her designs are made here in the UK, in a studio with energy bulbs, eco cleaning products and recyled stationary.  Phew.

It was great to hear what she had to say about green textiles.  I had no idea how severe the problems with the cotton industry are - pollution wise.  The industry uses more pesticides than any other crop on earth.  Ada suggests we look for alternatives; recyled nylon (surprisingly chic), silk and tencel.  That's to say nothing of the potential wonders of post-consumer waste!  Brilliant.

Zanditon cited her inspirations as Katharine Hamnett, Patagonia, and geometric shapes.  Evidently, a recipe for fashion fabulous.  Check out ASOS here for Ada's digital print Fairtrade scarf, part of the Fairtrade Collective project.
