off the hook: the pink granny square blanket

Check it out - in my excitement I got, like, two inches of air!

Phew! This FO has been a long time coming.
I starting hooking pink granny squares back in December 2013 and have been working towards having enough of them to make a blanket since then (find humble blanket beginnings in this post). It dawned on me that I had a whole heap of pink yarn in my stash, mostly DK, some nice, some not so nice. And I'd never made a blanket before, so why not? Granny squares are such good little portable projects. This must be one of the easiest ways to make a blanket.

I made the executive decision not to join them as I went. Yes, it sounds foolish, but I wanted to make sure I was happy with the arrangement before I joined them. There was A LOT of arranging and re-arranging. I almost went with ombre at one point, but it didn't work out with the shades I had.

The ceremonial joining of the squares was an unexpected joy (see elation here). While I categorically hate sewing up and weaving in ends, apparently I love joining with crochet. I used a super-simple dc seam and then worked a granny treble border so the wee blanket could gain a precious further few centimetres.

And ta da! Here I am many months later at last proudly brandishing a completed crochet blanket. Now there's a first.

As soon as I'd woven in the last end, we took the blanket on it's inaugural picnic outing. We had hummous, crackers and leftover curry and we ate VERY carefully. Nobody wants rogan josh on their latest FO.

And now it has made itself quite at home on our sofa. It's not the biggest, prettiest or neatest blanket, but I dearly love this little thing. I think it might be a while before I think about starting another one though! I think I might be a blanket-commitment-phobe.

Are you a blanket lover? Have you had one on the go for ages?

Apologies about my gut, but this was too ridiculous not to share.
Credit goes to Mr P for continuing to humour my yarny whims.

  1. I love it, well done you! The shape is great and well done for not spilling any food on it. Crocheting blankets is slightly addictive, I predict there will be more in your future!

    1. Thanks! Just remembered I've got another almost finished crochet blanket lurking behind the sofa (out of sight, out of mind) that needs a final bit of sewing up, so there will be another one! :)

  2. Hurray for an FO! I'm waiting for the day I finish my Beekeeper's Quilt that's been a WIP for four years now. I haven't sewnthe together yet for the same reason you waited as well. I like joining with crochet so maybe I'll do that when I'm finally done.

    1. Ooh, is that the Tiny Owl Knits one? Such a gorgeous project! Always tempted to start but couldn't commit. Bet it will be beautiful in the end though. I highly recommend crochet joining - it's fairly speedy. :)

    2. Yes, it's from Tiny Owl Knits. I have now run out of sock yarn scraps to use so there's a bit of a wait involved before I can continue.

  3. That's great! It looks so fun, and like a fantastic addition to your living room :) I haven't crocheted any blankets, but I've knit a couple, and they're always a huge commitment and take way longer than I'd like.

    1. Thanks Kat. I've got a shameful mess of knitted squares in my WIP basket that were meant to be a blanket, but I made them before I cottoned on to important stuff like tension or what difference needle size makes! Blankets always end up being a bit of a 'some day...' project! :)

    1. Thanks Gill, so chuffed I finished it. It's not as big as I would have liked, but have since discovered it's perfect for sofa snuggling :)

  7. the blanket is beautiful! well well done! I did the same thing when I first learnt to crochet with many purples and greys - though the blanket didn't come out nearly as beautifully as yours has :) well done I feel inspired to make another, though the prospect of not finishing for a year is a little daunting :) i love the pictures too :) jenny xxx

    1. Thank you Jenny! I'm a bit of a crochet late bloomer, and this blanket was a long time coming. Love the final thing, but it seemed to take so long! :) x
